Seven Best Profitec Go Accessories

Introduction

The Profitec Go has quickly become a staple when it comes to affordable yet functional espresso machines. With a small but mighty single boiler, commercial-style 58mm portafilter, and beautiful finishes associated with the Profitec brand, the Profitec Go is capable of delivering quality right out of the box.

However, throw in just a few meaningful accessories and the Profitec Go is able to pull shots just as good as machines nearly 3x the price (I know, I've tested them head-to-head).

In this article, we'll look at the top 7 best accessories for the Profitec Go that bring it to the next level.

Let's get accessorizing!

Scale & Portafilter Profitec Go

1. Quality Espresso Scale

The number one most important accessory for any espresso setup is a quality scale. A scale allows you to measure the dose of dry coffee in, and the yield of liquid espresso out. The ratio between these two numbers represents your extraction ratio. For example, a standard 18 gram double-shot dose ideally yields 36 grams of espresso in 30-45 seconds.

One of the few drawbacks of the Profitec Go is the rather small vertical working space between the bottom of a spouted portafilter, an the drip tray. With that in mind, not every scale will work with the Go.

Top Pick - Eureka Precision Scale

I've found that the best scale for me is the Eureka Precision Scale. It is small, quick to tare (zero), and splash-resistant. Plus it's made by one of the best brands in the business, and the design is sleek and effective.

Second Option - MHW Pocket Scale

If the Eureka Scale seems a bit too expensive for your first scale, the MHW-3BOMBER Pocket Scale will serve you well.

2. Bottomless Portafilter

One way to help open up space underneath the grouphead is to replace the stock, spouted portafilter, with a bottomless portafilter. Not only will a bottomless portafilter give you more vertical space to slot in your favorite glass, but it will help you pull better shots with more feedback from the basket during the extraction process.

Top Pick - Clive Coffee Walnut Portafilter

I love the E61 bottomless portafilters from Clive Coffee and use one for my Profitec Pro 600 every day. The real walnut finish and high-quality steel is not only beautiful (I've literally had friends comment on it when they come over), but it is rock solid and has survived more than one fall out of my hands in those sleepy mornings.

Second Pick - Normcore E61 Bottomless Portafilter

A great alternative is the Normcore E61-style Bottomless Portafilter. Although it doesn't quite have the same heft and finish as the Clive Coffee offering, it is still high quality and will get the job done.

3. Walnut Finish Kit

Top Pick - Clive Coffee Finish Kit

If you absolutely loved the walnut finish of the aforementioned Portafilter, you may want to look at the Wood Finishes Kit offered as a set for the Profitec Go. With both a walnut portafilter as well as a walnut steam knob, this kit is a sure way to spruce up your machine (pun intended). I have the walnut kit for my Pro 600 and can attest the tactile experience is significantly better - no matter how snobby that sounds.

Shot Glass & Dosing Funnel Profitec Go

4. Shot Glass

Okay back to planet earth with the accessories. One often overlooked accessory is an espresso shot glass. I found that even with a bottomless portafilter, some of my larger cappuccino or latte cups wouldn't quite fit underneath the portafilter.

To remedy this situation, I picked up a simple espresso shot glass. Purposefully designed for both a spouted and bottomless portafilter, these glasses are great for pulling shots, and then pouring into your actual mug.

5. Dosing Funnel

Moving on to talk about puck-prep - one of the must-have accessories is a dosing funnel. Transferring ground coffee from a dosing cup to a portafilter can be a risky affair, and I've spilled more overflow grounds than I'd like to admit.

Top Pick - Normcore Dosing Funnel

A quality dosing funnel helps avoid that spill-over and allows you to WDT with confidence. I use the Normcore magnetic dosing funnel as part of my daily brew-bar. I've found it is exactly the quality I'd hope for, without being exuberantly expensive.

Tamper & Puck Screen Profitec Go

6. Tamper

Once your grounds are transferred and distributed, the next step is to tamp your fluffy grounds into a tightly compressed puck. Although the Profitec Go does come with a tamper, it is not the highest quality, and has no leveling functionality.

Top Pick - Normcore V4 Taper

Upgrading to a leveling tamper like the Normcore V4 Tamper is a great investment. The Norcore design ensures self-leveling to make sure all parts of your puck are evenly tamped. In addition, the internal depth spring ensures that you don't over-tamp and potentially create channels within the puck.

7. Puck Screen

The final accessory I swear by is a puck screen. Although the Profitec Go does have a 3-way valve to release pressure on the puck, I have always found it a bit weaker than ideal. This means that wet, ground coffee separates from the puck and gets stuck inside the group head.

Using a puck screen will help keep your ground head clean and ensure your machine is ready to pull shot after shot. A pro-tip: after pulling your shot, smack the top of your portafilter with the flat of your palm 5-6 times to create a vacuum and dislodge the puck screen. Then you can just flip the portafilter over, and the puck screen should pop out.

The Final Sip

The Profitec Go is an extremely capable machine that can produce espresso as well as the rest of them. However, its small working space and plastic touchpoints leave something to be desired when it comes to the overall workflow. With just a few accessories to open up your working space, and keep your machine clean, the Profitec Go will serve you well for years to come.
