Profitec Jump Release Spotlight Review

Introduction

The Profitec Jump is one of the two newest additions to the Profitec lineup (along with the Profitec Move), succeeding the popular Profitec Pro 400.

Priced at $1,899, the Jump offers a sleek and modern take on the classic heat exchanger espresso machine with a host of new features including an OLED shot timer, walnut steam joysticks, and a rapid heat-up time.

Designed for baristas who expect a machine built to last, this 'E61 box' as they are lovingly called, looks to raise the bar in an already competitive market space.

In this spotlight, we’ll explore the key features of the Profitec Jump, highlight its standout features, identify its few misses, and compare it to its predecessor, the Profitec Pro 400.

Let's get brewing!

Machine Overview

Profitec Jump Machine Featues

E61 Group and Heat Exchanger

The Profitec Jump is built with a standard 58mm E61 grouphead. This classic design, invented in 1961, is immediately recognizable, and the Profitec Jump is no different. A solid chrome-plated-brass group head helps keep temperatures solid, and the tactile E61 lever activates the pump to start brewing.

The Jump comes with a dedicated steam boiler that superheats water to scalding steam temperatures. A solid metal coil runs through the steam boiler and is heated indirectly on the way to the group head. This design allows you to brew and steam at the same time, without the need for a separate boiler.

Compact Design

Measuring 22.8 cm wide, 44.8 cm deep, and 37.2 cm tall, the Jump maintains a compact footprint suitable for most kitchens. Even with a relatively compact footprint, the Jump houses a 1.6L steam boiler and 2.8L water reservoir, supplying hot water for shot after shot if you find yourself entertaining a crowd.

Shot Timer and Pressure Gauges

The front face of the Jump is decorated with two features critical to dialing in your brew. First is a discrete yet easily readable LED display that acts as a shot timer when the brew lever is lifted.

Underneath the timer display is a dual pressure-gauge cluster that shows both brew and steam temperatures. While many older models of Heat Exchanger machines only included a steam boiler indicator, Profitec has ensured the Jump has both data points covered.

What makes the Profitec Jump special?

Convenient Temperature Presets

While many Heat Exchanger machines lack a way to manage steam pressure and temperature, the Jump - like the older 400 - has 3 presents. You can select between 248°F, 255.2°F, and 262.4°F to add or relieve some of the pressure built up in the steam boiler.

ESB Tip: On my daily driver - the Profitec Pro 600 - I always have my steam temperature set to the max. A higher steam temperature quickens your time to steam, but also decreases the margin for error should you start with a bad texture. However, I've found that a higher pressure makes it easier to achieve that good texture right from the start.

Programmable Pre-Infusion & Noise-Conscious Pump

The Jump also comes with a feature often sorely lacking on E61 machines - preinfusion. Preinfusion delivers low-pressure (usually 2 bar) water to the puck, allowing the grounds to saturate and swell with water. This process that comes just before full-pressure extraction helps reduce channeling and ensures a more even shot.

In addition, the Jump has been built with ECM-Profitec's newest vibratory pump, which is significantly quieter than older models. One of the reasons for a rotary pump used to be the noise level difference, but this generation of machines makes it far less important.

Aesthetic Enhancements

The Jump also comes with a collection of walnut steam and hot water joysticks, upgrades that have been seen across the new Profitec Line.

Hell, I (ESB Chris) paid a fair deal more for walnut accents on my Profitec Machine when I originally purchased it, so I am beyond excited to see them become standard on Profitec Machines.

What is the Profitec Jump Missing?

Limited Digital Interface

While the PID and shot timer are functional, the interface lacks actual control buttons seen on some competing machines. While this doesn't impact the day-to-day workflow of the Jump, it leaves something to be desired if you find yourself adjusting temperatures frequently.

Inspiring Design Changes

Of course, some may complain that the Jump is 'just another E61 box,' and to be fair, it is. Although I am partial to this classic design, at least options like the Rocket Appartamento Nera has some added flair and colors.

Comparison: Profitec Jump vs Profitec Pro 400

Profitec Jump vs Profitec Pro 400

Heating and Performance

Both the Jump and Pro 400 feature a heat exchanger system and a 58mm E61 grouphead. In addition, both have 3-way temperature control, similar heat-up time and shot consistency. Pretty much apples to apples here.

Design and Aesthetics

The Jump does make a leap (sorry, had to) forward with its design choices, namely the walnut accents and joystick knobs. The older Pro 400 comes with plastic rotary knobs (ew) and an overall older design. This doesn't impact the quality of the coffee, but could be a conversation piece in your kitchen!

Which One To Buy

The Jump is effectively a successor of the Pro 400 as well as the Pro 500. If you have the budget, I would strongly suggest the Jump with its overall face-lift, collection of new features, and better support in years to come.

Pricing and Availability

The Profitec Jump is priced at $1,899, which is relatively comparable to its closest modern rivals like the Lelit Mara X. ECM-Profitec is primarily imported into the United States by Clive Coffee and Whole Latte Love.

EspressoSetupBuilder has partnered with Clive Coffee, and if you buy through them, it does help support the site.

The Final Sip

The Profitec Jump is a great choice for home baristas seeking a modern E61 option in a compact, stylish package. With features like PID control, a shot timer, and walnut accents, it delivers solid value at its price point. While it may not disrupt the world of home espresso, I'm sure we'll find space for the Jump in our hearts, and on our countertops.
