Profitec Move Espresso Machine Spotlight

Introduction

The Profitec Move is one of the newest releases from the German manufacturer, ECM-Profitec. As a direct successor to the long-lived Pro 300, the Move serves to solidify Profitec's place in the sub-$2000 price range. With a dual-boiler design, fast heat-up mode, and full PID control, the Move provides quality, functionality, and value all in one package.

In this Release Spotlight, we'll take a look at the core design choices of the Profitec Move, highlight what makes it unique, identify its misses, and compare it to the older Profitec Pro 300.

Machine Overview

Profitec Move Machine Featues

Powerful Dual Boilers

The Profitec Move is one of the few high-quality dual boiler machines in its price range. With a dedicated 0.4-liter brew boiler, and 0.75-liter steam boiler, the Profitec Move is not as big as the larger Pro 600 and Drive models, but it delivers big on value.

A separate brew and steam boiler is important for two reasons. First is that the Move is capable of brewing and steaming concurrently (at the same time). This means if you are regularly making multiple cortados or cappuccinos, you are able to steam your milk while the shot pulls, shortening your overall workflow.

In addition, having separate boilers means more thermal stability. Compared to a single boiler that has to oscillate between brewing and steaming temperatures, two dedicated boilers can remain thermally consistent throughout back-to-back brewing cycles.

Simple Button Interface

The Profitec Move features a simple button and knob interface. Shots are started and stopped by simple stainless steel buttons, while the steam and hot water tap is activated by a joystick-style knob.

In addition, the move has a simple on/off button and a dual measurement gauge cluster, measuring the pressure of both the brew and steam boilers.

Quality of Life Upgrades

The Move comes stock with a high-quality set of accents and touches including the powder-coated-esque finish, walnut access pieces, and chrome-plated Saturated group head.

The Profitec Move also features ECM-Profitec's newest OLED display that allows you to control all features of the machine including cleaning cycles, brew & steam temperatures, and much more.

What makes the Profitec Move special?

Profitec Move Special Display

Daily Scheduling

One of the available functions to configure in the integrated OLED display is a daily on/off schedule. While larger dual-boiler espresso machines have historically been notorious for slow heat-ups and jerry-rigged smart outlets, the Profitec Move allows you to set a morning wake-up time to it is hot and ready by the time you roll out of bed.

Rapid Heat Up

If you are someone who finds themselves pulling shots throughout the day, and a warm-up schedule won't cut it, have no fear.

The Move also features a rapid heat-up that brings the machine boilers and grouphead up to temperature in under 10 minutes. Compared to traditional dual boilers (especially E61-style machines), the Move saves 10-15 minutes on each heat-up cycle.

Programmable Volumetric Shots

One of the most exciting features of the Profitec Move is the automatic volumetric shot control. While most espresso machines in this price range cater to the home barista who wants to start and stop their shots manually, the Move is designed for users who appreciate programmable shots.

With an option for one-shot or two-shots, the Move allows you to program two different extraction volumes. That means you manually pull (manually start and stop) the first shot, and the Move will remember the total extraction volume for subsequent shots.

While this is a wonderful feature - I (ESB Chris) will note that I've never had particular success with volumetric programming.

What is the Profitec Move Missing?

Inspiring Design

One of the only weaknesses of the move - in my eyes - is the design. As someone who appreciates a classic E61 design, or more modern designs like the Ascaso Steel Duo, I find the Move rather uninspiring. It looks like a grown-up version of the Profitec Go with more buttons, dials, and features. To be honest, this isn't a bad thing and if you like the design, more power to you.

Availability

Given the Move's incredible value for the price, it is likely to join the ranks of hard-to-find products like the Profitec Go, and DF54/64. If you're able to find one in stock, or even for pre-order I'd highly recommend snagging it while you can.

Comparison: Profitec Move vs Profitec Pro 300

Profitec Move vs Profitec Pro 300

Heating Element and Interface

Both the Profitec Move and older Profitec Pro 300 are dual boilers that support concurrent brewing and steaming functionality.

However, the Move has a slightly larger Brew Boiler and Steam Boiler, both of which are insulated for faster heating, thermal retention, and energy savings.

Design and Build

The Move takes much of its inspiration from the Pro with its boxy design and button interface. While the Pro had toggle switches, the Move features press buttons that are more easily accessible on its front face.

In addition, the Profitec Move features a dual-function cluster gauge to measure the brew and steam pressure, compared to the steam-only measurement on the 300.

Features

The Move also comes with a host of feature upgrades not found on the Pro 300. Rapid heat-up, scheduled on-off, and programmable volumetric shots just to name a few. Profitec has been investing significantly into the feature set found on their machines, and the Move touts everything they've released to date.

Which to Buy

In this case, it's a no-brainer. The Move is a direct evolution of the Pro 300. It has higher quality components, a modern design, and all the new features a barista would want.

Pricing and Availability

The Profitec Move retails at $1,999 in the United States, and slightly more throughout Europe. Clive Coffee and Whole Latte Love are the two approved U.S. vendors of Profitec, and all other retailers are often partners or resellers from these imports.

The Final Sip

The Profitec Move is the new kid on the block when it comes to quality espresso machines under $2000. With reliable dual boilers, unmatched quality, and a host of meaningful new features, the Profitec Move is sure to brew up some news as it becomes widely available.
